What is Interoperability?

Healthcare has long faced challenges surrounding fragmented patient data as a result of siloed electronic health record (EHR) systems. Interoperability directly addresses this challenge by allowing different information systems and applications to securely communicate and exchange data utilizing HIEs, APIs, standards across all relevant stakeholders.

With the 21st Century Cures Act and CMS Interoperability and Patient Access Final Rule, these new policies support access, exchange, and use of electronic health information and enable innovation of new applications across the healthcare ecosystem. The regulations are supporting interoperability standardization by utilizing Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resource, FHIR®, to bi-directional data exchange from any EHR or information system. The enforcement of the regulation will start this year, 2021, which are great steps for true interoperability.

The four benefits of an interoperability solution are:

  1. Improved Care Coordination – Interoperability helps to streamline the administrative process to provide real-time data at the point of care and ensure claims are accurate and complete.
  2. Quality Care – Payers and providers now have access to a patient’s complete recorded health history and can deliver proactive treatment in a timely manner.
  3. New Workflows – Administrators now have access to complete data that can be attained in a simplistic and secure process.
  4. Patient Data Accuracy – Interoperability solutions prevent errors due to missing or incomplete patient data.
